FELLOWSHIP WITH MEN in the open.

Success.

It furthers one to cross the great water.

The perseverance of the superior man furthers

the image

Heaven together with fire:

The image of FELLOWSHIP WITH MEN.

Thus the superior man organizes the clans

And makes distinctions between things.

Nine at the beginning means:

Fellowship with men at the gate.

No blame.


Six in the second place means:

Fellowship with men in the clan.

Humiliation.


Nine in the third place means:

He hides weapons in the thicket;

He climbs the high hill in front of it.

For three years he does not rise up


Nine in the fourth place means:

He climbs up on his wall; he cannot attack.

Good fortune.


Nine in the fifth place means:

Men bound in fellowship first weep and lament,

But afterward they laugh.

After great struggles they succeed in meeting.


Nine at the top means:

Fellowship with men in the meadow.

No remorse.

Explanation of the entire figure by king Wăn

Thung Zăn (or 'Union of men') appears here (as we find it) in the

(remote districts of the) country, indicating progress and success. It will

be advantageous to cross the great stream. It will be advantageous to maintain

the firm correctness of the superior man.

Explanation of the separate lines by the duke of Kâu

The first NINE, undivided,

(shows the representative of) the union of men just issuing from his gate.

There will be no error.


The second SIX, divided,

(shows the representative of) the union of men in relation with his kindred.

There will be occassion for regret.


The third NINE, undivided,

(we see its subject as) the superior man active and vigilant all the day, and

in the evening still careful and apprehensive. (The position is) dangerous,

but there will be no mistake.


In the fourth NINE, undivided,

(shows its subject) mounted on the city wall; but he does not proceed to make the attack

(he contemplates). There will be good fortune.


In the fifth NINE, undivided,

(the representative of) the union of men first wails and cries out, and then laughs.

His great host conquers, and he (and the subject of the second line) meet together.


The topmost NINE, undivided,

(shows the representative of) the union of men in the suburbs.

There will be no occasion for repentance.

In terms of their categories.

Seeking harmony

Begins with crying and weeping,

Each with laughing.

The great multitude succeeds in meeting.

Seeking harmony in the countryside.
