Furthering through perseverance.

The movement of heaven is full of power.

Thus the superior man makes himself strong and untiring.

Nine at the beginning means:

Hidden dragon. Do not act.


Nine in the second place means:

Dragon appearing in the field.


Nine in the third place means:

All day long the superior man is creatively active.

At nightfall his mind is still beset with cares.

Danger. No blame.


Nine in the fourth place means:

Wavering flight over the depths.

No blame.


Nine in the fifth place means:

Flying dragon in the heavens.

It furthers one to see the great man.


Nine at the top means:

Arrogant dragon will have cause to repent.


When all the lines are nines, it means:

There appears a flight of dragons without heads.

Good fortune.


1/ 乾 / ䷀ / The Khien Hexagram

Explanation of the entire figure by king Wăn

Khien (represents) what is great and originating, penetrating, advantageous, correct and firm.

Explanation of the separate lines by the duke of Kâu

In the first (or lowest) NINE, undivided,

(we see its subject as) the dragon lying hid (in the deep).

It is not the time for active doing.


In the second NINE, undivided,

(we see its subject as) the dragon lying hid (in the deep).

It will be advantageous to meet with the great man.


In the third NINE, undivided,

(we see its subject as) the superior man active and vigilant all the day, and

in the evening still careful and apprehensive. (The position is) dangerous, but there will be no mistake.


In the fourth NINE, undivided,

(we see its subject as the dragon looking) as if he were leaping up, but still in the deep.

There will be no mistake.


In the fifth NINE, undivided,

(we see its subject as) the dragon on the wing in the sky.

It will be advantageous to meet with the great man.


In the sixth (or topmost) NINE, undivided,

(we see its subject as) the dragon exceeding the proper limits.

There will be occasion for repentance.


(The lines of this hexagram are all strong and undivided, as appears from) the use of the number NINE

If the host of dragons (thus) appearing were to divest themselves of their heads, there would be good fortune.

Dragon becoming haughty.

There is regret.

There appears a group of dragons without a chief.
